Website migrations are a large, highly nuanced topic. It’s very easy to get them wrong… resulting in lost search rankings and referral traffic. We’ve seen it happen countless times. Many web developers simply underestimate the importance of permanent redirects. Others mismanage them.

If you’re completely new to permanent redirects, here’s an example:

If you follow either of the “discovery” links, you’ll be redirected to our “free SEO audit” page. This is done via 301 redirect.

This is similar to how Bitly and TinyURL links work. Anyone trying to navigate to the first location is immediately sent to the second location.

Here’s a bitly link pointed to our original discovery page:

It is now basically a “double redirect” or one link in a “redirect chain.”

When migrating a site, you want to avoid redirect chains. Whenever possible, links should be built directly from one resource to another. However, it’s crucial that you’re extremely thorough when managing 301 redirects. The larger the site, the bigger the changes: the more to consider.

Done right, permanent redirects can boost your SEO and other marketing efforts. Done wrong, they could knock out half of your search traffic. This has a direct impact on inbound leads–and eventually sales and revenue.
